Powerball Just Announced Changes to the Game
Here’s what they mean for you
This post has been updated with new information from Powerball’s most recent announcement.
On April 2, Powerball announced new changes to go into effect after the April 8 drawing. So, without further ado, let’s dig into what’s changing and when.
What’s changing about Powerball?
Two things will be changing:
- Starting jackpot amounts will now be based off of ticket sales. Previously, Powerball had a guaranteed starting amount of $40 million.
- Jackpot increases between drawings will also be based on sales. Previously, jackpots grew by a minimum of $10 million between drawings.
The changes will start immediately after the Powerball drawing on April 8.
Following the April 8 drawing, guaranteed starting jackpot amounts and minimum jackpot increases will be eliminated, and future jackpot increases will be determined and announced. prior to each drawing.
Why is Powerball making these changes?
The organization that operates the Powerball game says these changes are necessary to ensure that ticket sales can support Powerball prizes during the coronavirus pandemic and that the game continues to raise money for good causes.
“Our number one priority is making sure that the Powerball game can continue to assist lotteries in raising proceeds for their beneficiaries,” the announcement states.
Powerball ticket sales benefit great causes supported by lotteries in the 48 states and jurisdictions that offer the game.
