Lucky Dog Program

These dogs are not currently at the Hutchinson Animal Shelter.

A Lucky Dog Is a Rescued Dog

Lucky dogs are rescued from the Hutchinson Animal Shelter. These dogs are lucky because this is a second chance for them. The dogs are temperament tested and only friendly dogs are entered into the Lucky Dog program.

A Lucky Dog Is a Trained Dog

Lucky Dogs receive training from inmates at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. The dogs are taught basic obedience commands and learn to come, sit, lay down, and stay. They are housebroken, crate trained, and are taught to walk on a leash.

This is a 2nd chance for the lucky dogs, and is also a 2nd chance for the prisoners. Inmates selected to participate in this program are given the opportunity to give back to their community by helping to train dogs that would likely otherwise be euthanized. The inmates that train the dogs are selected based on their performance in prison. They must be on their best behavior in order to participate in the program.

The Lucky Dog program is run by Friends of Animals in Need. If you would like to contact the Lucky Dog Program please call Connie or Vicky at the below numbers:

About Friends of Animals in Need, Inc./Lucky Dog Program

We are a 501C-3 originally formed to help our previous shelter with medical expenses for shelter animals. At the
request of the warden of the prison, we started the Lucky Dog Program in the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. We
are licensed as a non-facility shelter and the prison acts as our foster. We pull our dogs from kill shelters and take
from the public when the dog is in jeopardy. We have fourteen to fifteen dogs inside the prison at any time. We
temperament test, spay/neuter, vaccinate, heartworm test
(if positive, we treat), and worm the dogs prior to going into
the program. The dogs are kept on heartworm preventive
each month along with flea and tick preventive during the season. We are four volunteers who love animals and want to save dogs from being euthanized due to the numbers in shelters. We realize that most of the dogs in
shelters are there, not because they are bad but because
no one took the time to train them or work to modify
unwanted behaviors. We believe in positive training methods and use treats and praise for the desired behavior and ignore the undesired behavior.

We do not have a facility but do take our dogs to events outside of the prison. We partner with PetCo and have one or two of our dogs there once a month.

Friends of Animals in Need, Inc./Lucky Dog Program’s Adopted Pets

Adopt-a-Pet.com is the easiest way for you to search for a new pet in Hutchinson, KS.

Support Adoption and Rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

    Why Should You Adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
