FLORIDA TODAY’s Rob Landers brings you some of today’s top stories on the News in 90 Seconds for Oct. 5. Florida Today

Seems like the price of everything goes up — eventually.

Such is the case for the twice-weekly Florida Lotto game which, starting Thursday, Oct. 8, will now cost $2, matching the price of nationally played Mega Millions and Powerball tickets.

All three offer an optional dollar investment to earn even more cash.

The new version of the Florida Lotto game “will offer players bigger prizes and better overall odds,” according to lottery officials. A new logo and draw show also will be unveiled for Saturday night’s initial drawing.

Among the new features are a prize multiplier on every ticket, a new prize level for matching 2-of-6 numbers, and a new add-on feature that gives players the chance to win up to $250,000 in additional cash prizes for the extra $1 investment.

Wednesday’s jackpot, the last of its current kind, has a $6.25 million jackpot.

Since introducing the Florida Lotto game in 1988, it has generated more than $8 billion for Florida’s students and schools, according to officials.

The game has had more than 401 million winning tickets totaling more than $10.3 billion in prizes. Additionally, the lotto game alone has created more than 1,000 millionaires.

Starting Thursday, Oct. 8, the new version of Florida Lotto begins

Florida Lotto

Florida Lotto is the biggest draw game in the state, with jackpots starting at $1 million and often rising to over $20 million. Non-jackpot prizes can be multiplied by up to 10 times, and you can add Double Play and EZmatch for even more ways to win serious cash. Tickets cost just $2 per play for the basic game, with two chances to win every week – draws take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:15 PM EST. Pick up your tickets before sales close at 10:40 pm on draw nights.

How to Play

All you need to do to play Lotto is pick six numbers from 1 to 53. For an even faster play, select Quick Pick and the lottery computer will randomly choose your numbers.

Love your numbers? Advance Play is the easiest way to play the same lucky digits for multiple draws.

All tickets also include a multiplier number that boosts any prizes below the jackpot by two, three, four, five, or even 10 times.

Lotto has two awesome options you can add to your ticket. It only costs $1 per play, per add-on:

  • Double Play has an extra draw where you could win up to $250,000 in cash using the same numbers you chose for Lotto. The Double Play draw is held just after the main Lotto draw. Visit the Double Play page to learn more.
  • EZmatch offers on-the-spot wins of up to $500 in cash prizes. If you add this option, a separate ticket will print with your EZmatch numbers.

After the draw, check your ticket to see if you’ve won a prize! Win the jackpot by matching all six numbers drawn. Winners can choose to receive the advertised jackpot amount as 30 yearly annuity payments, or take a smaller lump sum cash option. To receive the cash option, the winner is required to redeem their prize within 60 days of the draw – otherwise, the claim period is 180 days. All prizes below the jackpot are fixed amounts.

Prizes and Odds of Winning

Here’s a breakdown of how many numbers you need to match to win a Florida Lotto prize and the odds for each prize tier. The extra multiplier number on each ticket will increase non-jackpot wins by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 times their base prize value.
