Game Information

Iowa residents are truly spoiled when it comes to lottery games – not only can they take part in Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto America and Lucky for Life, they can also indulge in fun in-state games, Pick 3 and Pick 4.

Pick 3

Iowa Pick 3 began in 1998 and is now played twice a day, at around 12.20pm and 10pm. There are five different ways to play, and the type of game a player chooses determines the prizes they can win.

  1. Straight – Match all three numbers in the order they are drawn.
  2. Box – Match all three numbers in any order.
  3. Straight/Box – Match the numbers either exactly or in any order.
  4. Front Pair: Match the first two numbers in the order they are drawn.
  5. Back Pair: Match the last two numbers in the order they are drawn.
Type of Play Odds $0.50 $1 $2 $3 $4 $5
Straight 1 in 1,000 $300 $600 $1,200 $1,800 $2,400 $3,000
Box 6-Way 1 in 167 $50 $100 $200 $300 $400 $500
Box 3-Way 1 in 333 $100 $200 $400 $600 $800 $1,000
Straight/Box 6-Way Exact 1 in 1,000 N/A $350 $700 $1,050 $1,400 $1,750
Straight/Box 6-Way Any 1 in 167 N/A $50 $100 $150 $200 $250
Straight/Box 3-Way Exact 1 in 1,000 N/A $400 $800 $1,200 $1,600 $2,000
Straight/Box 3-Way Any 1 in 333 N/A $100 $200 $300 $400 $500
Front Pair 1 in 100 $30 $60 $120 $180 $240 $300
Back Pair 1 in 100 $30 $60 $120 $180 $240 $300

A 3-Way game is used to describe a selection where two of the three numbers are the same, for example 112, as there are only three different ways the numbers can be ordered (112, 121, 211). If a selection has three different numbers, for example 123, it is called 6-Way (123, 132, 213, 231, 312, 321).

Pick 4 is a very similar game to Pick 3, except players must select four numbers and there are even more ways to win. It is possible to win up to $30,000 for matching four main numbers in the order they are drawn.

Iowa Scratch Cards

The Iowa Lottery also sells a wide variety of Scratch and pull-tab games. These instant win games are sold at authorized retailers alongside tickets for draw games, but the difference is that you could win a cash prize straight away if you pick up a Scratch ticket or a pull-tab ticket. Why not pick up one today and see what happens?

Claiming Iowa Lottery Prizes

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, there have been some changes in the way you claim prizes in Iowa. You can find updates on our dedicated Coronavirus Lottery Updates page.

You’ll have 90 days from the draw date to claim any prizes you won from Iowa draw games like Pick 3 and Pick 4. Scratch, and pull-tab wins must be redeemed within 90 days of the official end-of-game date. InstaPlay prizes need to be collected within 90 days of purchase. Winners have 365 days to claim prizes from multi-state lottery games like Mega Millions, Powerball, Lucky for Life and Lotto America.

All prizes under $1 million may be collected via mail (see below).

If you win up to $600 on a lottery or Scratch game, then you can also redeem your prize from any authorized retailer. If you win up to $600 on a pull-tab game, then you need to go back to where you purchased the ticket in order to claim your winnings.

The lottery has also implemented a secure dropbox for leaving claims at its Clive headquarters – contact the lottery for details if you are interested in using this option.

Prizes of $1 million and above and some merchandise prizes must be claimed in person at lottery headquarters in Clive; contact the lottery to arrange an appointment.

Prizes worth $600 or more will be subject to a state tax of five percent and all prizes worth $5,000 or more will be subject to an additional federal withholding tax of 25 percent.
