Fresno State employee wins MEGA Millions jackpot
Just after 7 a.m. Wednesday morning there was a small celebration going on inside the 7-Eleven store across the street from Fresno State. The clerks were shaking the hands with a man and smiling. A 7-Eleven official confirmed that man was the winner of the $30.5 million MEGA Millions jackpot.
As quickly as he came in to get his usual Red Bull drink, he was out and on his way to work.
Action News spoke with him for a quick second and he was still in shock. He said his name was Alex and that he worked at Fresno State on the field. When asked when he was going to cash in the winning ticket, he laughed, and left.
Store clerks say Alex is a regular customer and a very nice man. Local lottery officials say this $30-million dollar win is exciting for everyone.
“Not too often we get a big winner. Because we’re talking about 38 different states that are in the pool for the MEGA Millions so it’s yeah it’s kind of a big deal for California to have a big winner,” said California State Lottery Fresno supervisor Henry Hernandez.
Wednesday morning, California Lottery officials put up the store’s first ever “millionaires made here” sign. With a matching ticket, that means the store also wins as well — and in fact, this is the store’s first big win.
The franchisee will receive half a percent of the winner’s earnings, which amounts to a little more than $152-thousand. As of late Wednesday morning, the winner had not stopped by the local California Lottery office to cash in his ticket.
The total MEGA Millions jackpot was $61-million dollars. Two people in the country had those magic MEGA Million numbers. Besides Fresno, the other winning ticket was sold in Massachusetts.
A Valley man is $30-million richer after winning Tuesday night's MEGA Millions lottery. The winning ticket was sold at the 7-Eleven store on Shaw and Maple in the last week.
2 winning lottery tickets worth millions sold at Clovis stores
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Set For Life, those words could not ring more true for one Fresno County resident.
“I scratched a fifth of the ticket and saw the words life, and I knew right away,” said winner Derick.
In an instant, Derick became a millionaire. He doesn’t want us to use his last name to protect his privacy.
That life-changing moment happened at this Shop N Go in Clovis off Willow and Nees.
“I do sometimes like to think that it was fate,” he said.
Manager Charanjeet Pahal sold the winning scratcher.
“The ticket was sitting there all night and first thing in the morning, about 10 minutes into my shift, he came in and bought the ticket,” he said.
Pahal said normally, his regulars are there first thing in the morning to buy lotto scratchers.
But Derick made it through the door before they could.
“He beat them by 30 seconds,” he said.
He made a quick stop and decided to play. The scratcher he wanted was sold out, but the ticket of his dreams was right in front of him.
“It has got a real catchy name, set for life,” he said. “I know that sounds appealing to anybody.”
He’ll now be receiving $10,000 dollars every month for the next 25 years. It couldn’t have come at a better time.
Derick had just moved in with his in-laws and was trying to pay off his debt as he saved up for a home.
He would often buy scratchers as he hoped and prayed for a miracle.
“We ended up with a little bit more,” he said. “Enough to pay off our debt and enough to buy our home.”
Luck must have been in the air as just a few blocks away from the Shop N Go, another person hit the jackpot at the University Market off Willow and Shaw.
Here, someone won $1.7 million dollars by matching all five numbers in a lottery except the Powerball.
The chances of winning the Powerball are one in 11 million. Your odds are a little bit better for the scratcher grand prize, one in four million.
Two people in Fresno County have scored big in the California Lottery, and the winning tickets came from two stores in Clovis.
